Mace Mass Production

Me and Lince were building a pole arm for him, it was intended to be a spear but we made a striking surface about as long as meager's bats it's 3 layers of foam thick with a half Nerf football for a stabbing tip

We tested it out and it appears safe and sound though we would like some one with more experience to double check it.

Assuming that it works I came up with an idea to make these on a small scale. They would maces (single blue) with green stabbing tips

I can make them and sell them to people who don't have single blues (or people who just want one) for cheap. The more people want the more cost effective it become. 2-$10 4-$15 Since they take a lot less time to make than blue swords I can almost mass produce these. So if people get together to split the cost It becomes even more cost effective since your paying less and I can make more at a time.

While I could make some for community gear I hesitate only because I think it might just continuously precipitate the same problem we have now with gear wearing down and not being taken care of where as if people owned these weapons they would be more inclined to take care of them so can repair what we have.

Also it would put weapons in people hands so we don't have the problem of one 4 people relying on one person to bring gear. For $10 you can be fighting Florentine if you have a friend who wants to do the same it's only $7.50 a person for two weapons each!

I will bring an example on Saturday for those that are still in town if anyone is interested.

Most of your target audience will be out of town by then lol. However, I would like to know the specs on the weapons (i.e. PVC diameter and whether you used thick wall and blah blah blah) and I am also wondering why you don't just make a bunch of swords.

By building swords you force people to put that extra little effort into controlling their shots so that they aren't wildly flailing/flatting people. I think the idea is great, but you would be able to cut down costs even more by making swords (as they use significantly less foam than maces).

An exception might be if you were to make maces similar in shape to Deakon's speed bat. If you made the striking surface the minimal 6" and made no stabbing tip, you might be able to force more precise shots than if you made a mace with 16+" of striking surface.

One more thing, if you want to put some balance in those swords/maces, buy carriage bolts at WalMart or wherever they're cheapest (WalMart's are like 97 cents). They're a few inches long and can fit right inside the core where the pommel is.

P.S. Have Smitty or Deakon check those weapons out. They will know what they're doing.

When I made my blue swords they used more foam and took a while to make because they required more cuts. These could be done in 45 minutes. I was going to have the striking surface be 8" using three layers of 1" thick camping foam all around the pvc insulation between the striking surface and the grip

lol camping foam is approximately 3/8-1/2 of an inch thick and you should NEVER use pipe insulation. It may be more convenient, but a weapon will break down within a month (most likely a week) if it is made with any pipe insulation. I can make about four to five swords with a single roll of camping pad, even if the cutting takes a while.

I'll be out at practice on Saturday and I would love to see what you have!! As well as go over different strategies for pulling off what I think you want to do. Sounds like you have the basics down, and Meager is right about the foam, Blue camp pad foam from walmart is only 3/8" thick. I would love it if it came in 1" though! Please let me know if you found this! See you on saturday.

Three layers on a striking surface is sufficient. emoticon Too bad about the foam not being 1" thick... i was excited there for a second.

It's dire to have the proper reinforcement under the stabbing tip. Keep that in mind when making these. Also you can use ensolite stabbing tips (see Arrakis' design on the main forums), it's super easy and can be added to most sword designs after construction.
