You don't use a can lid itself. You use the entire can (without the lid). There's practically no chance to cut yourself, and the circles are perfect with no rough edges.

Smitty's method, actually, requires no measuring at all.

I just made minimal cuts, stuck it on there, then trimmed whatever was sticking off the end. Worked out beautifully.
