Deakon's wake...

Eyes burn

Throat dry

Body aches

I felt as if I drifted back into my body very gradually, though I was totally aware of each nerve that burned, each twitch that shot though it. Cautiously, I lifted my head, and the smell hit me. Rotting leaves, stagnate water, still air, all rushed into my nostrils as I took what felt to be my first deep breath in hours. I coughed to try to clear my lungs of it and decided I would just have to get used to it… the air surrounded me with this stench and I could not escape it.

Hearing a noise behind me, I whirled around and reached for my Kukri, only to find my belt where it should have been. Franticly searching the ground about me, I looked for a javelin, my bow, my club, even a heavy branch would have sufficed. I wanted an object to defend myself. Nothing. Eyes moving wild, I looked for the source of the noise, only to be met by the mist that surrounded me. A call from a bird I was not familiar with and the bubbling of mud off in the distance, I realized this was no bog I have ever set foot in.

Searching my thoughts, I tried to remember how I got here, where my personal items have gone to, where was the rest of the crusade? Then some of it came back to me. Three nights ago, I was asked by Mithris to scout out ahead. We were on the trail of one of the artifacts to be kept from the evil. Brock was going to come with me. After traveling ahead a few days, my brethren and I were about to go back and warn the Crusade of a large Black Orc encampment we encountered. We would have the council decide our next actions. On our travels back, we crossed paths with a raiding pack of Black Orcs. Buying Brock some time, I told him to race ahead while I slowed down the Orcs. Wounding all but two from a distance with arrows and a javelin, I was forced to face them.

As I was ready to face death to save the rest of the crusade, I heard a shout from behind the Orcs. I woman dressed is muddy rags held her hands over her head and chanted a few syllables in a tongue I never heard. She spat in our direction and some of the black sludge that breeds evil hit my face. About to turn and flee from the Orcs since they had their attention on the woman, took one step and heard a deathly ring in my ears. The woman was holding out her hands and screaming. The Orcs too held hands over their ears and looked as if they were in pain. I fell to my knees and prayed to the Sun herself to take me away from this awful woman. Just then, she clapped her hands together and I was surrounded in pitch black and silence…

Finding myself on my hands and knees again, I now looked at my own reflection in a pool of the stagnate waters around me. I still had a spot of the black sludge the woman spat on me. With a scoop of my hand in the nasty water, I cleared it from my forehead, allowing the water to fall back into the pool. I went to stand up and noticed the footprints a few yards away. Human, barefoot, small… the woman’s? And then to my horror, two sets of tracks that could only belong to Black Orcs. Both sets lead away in different directions. After considering which tracks to follow, I decided to follow the woman’s tracks north, in hope for answers in this unfamiliar land.
